Happy Father's Day!!!!!!

Happy Father's Day to all the awesome Daddy's out there! And an extra special Happy one to my Daddy! He has taught me all I ever needed to know and loved me all the while. He is by far my greatest role model and I love him so so much. He has always been there to pick me up when I was done to help me up and make me laugh. I always know I am safe in his arms and I will always be his little girl. My dad and I are two peas in a pod and I look up to him so much and greatly admire just about everything about him. Thank you Daddy!!!!

He never looks for praises
He's never one to boast
He just goes on quietly working
For those he loves the most
His dreams are seldom spoken
His wants are very few
And most of the time his worries
Will go unspoken too
He's there.... A firm foundation
Through all our storms of life
A sturdy hand to hold to
In times of stress and strife
A true friend we can turn to
When times are good or bad
One of our greatest blessings,
The man that we call Dad.

Fear Factor Returns

So, does anyone else remember that epic American classic stunt/dare reality game show, Fear Factor? My brother and I used to absolutely love the show I remember watching all the time and then playing it out in the backyard with my brother and sister coming up with all kinds of crazy concoctions to eat and stunts to do. Funniest part was how my sister would always eat what ever we gave her despite my brother and I throwing it off the porch or finding some what to hide it lol. And yet she could never get past the stunt stage as a simple task of jumping of the back pouch no more than 4 feet of the jump might as well been jumping out of a helicopter with no parachute for her. I guess having 8 years on here might have helped our victories but we had so much fun anyways. It was definitely our dream to make it on the show and we made sure to train regularly, so it was a very sad day when they stopped the show. But now to here that it is coming back is very exciting hopefully I now have the chance to make my premiere and 50,000 dollars I might add xD. Now to figure out how to apply....Anyone know??

Oh and just for fun here is some neat info on the show in case your not a fanatic and would like to become one. Fear Factor was based on a Dutch show called Now or Never-land (I am not gonna lie I love that name even better). When NBC imported the format to the States in 2001, it enlisted comedian Joe Rogan as the host. Each Fear Factor episode was split up into three parts: a physical challenge, a gross-out challenge and an action stunt. My siblings and I follow this format in our mini versions as well, although we all were aloud to advance. Some of the many things that were done in the show included laying in vats of snakes, rats and roaches, eat live insects or raw buffalo testicles, or find a hidden object in a vat of blood.

Telegdy notes that the series may be toned down somewhat upon its return – not a bad idea, considering it earned the ire of animal rights activists for many episodes. While the format may fit well in today’s talent (or lack there of) and personality-driven reality scene (see American Idol and Jersey Shore), fans of the original show will likely have one question: will Joe Rogan return to his hosting duties? The verdict is still out on that one my friends time shall tell. They are casting for the show right now (looking for pairs of twos- anyone wanna go with me????) and plan on making it bigger. That gets me thinking to what kind of stunts they would have then. And still trying to figure out how to get in on the action, but I am excited for the possibility of doing it and deff for watching it take off again.

Memorial Day

First off I want to wish everyone a blessed Memorial Day particularly to all the loved ones of those who have perished protecting our freedoms. They have sacrificed so much for us and let us never forget how blessed we are today because of the men and women who have sacrificed to fight for the sake of our country and the freedoms presented to us. Secondly to all of those who have served or are currently served, Thank You!!! I am so blessed in what you are doing, and just want to honor you and offer my gratitude for all you have and continue to do for our country.
Now I wonder who really knows any of the history of Memorial Day, when and where it originated or why? Sadly not too much is known by the vast majority of people and it has become little more than a day off to picnic and enjoy the begging of summer. So let me reveal some facts for you.

So Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day originates back May 30th 1868, and was established in response to the loss of American lives in the Civil war. Although many places celebrated in a similar way 1868 was the first year that it was officially recognized as a holiday (was first declared a holiday May 5th 1868). The designated purpose of this holiday was to decorate graves of those that had died in defense of their country with flowers. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays).
Waterloo, NY, oddly enough has been declared as the “birthplace” of Memorial Day in 1966 by Congress and then by President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Although a number of cities, argue Memorial Day/ Decoration Day and it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead.

Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country. To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps." The Moment of Remembrance is a step in the right direction to returning the meaning back to the day. What is needed is a full return to the original day of observance. Set aside one day out of the year for the nation to get together to remember, reflect and honor those who have given their all in service to their country.

So in honor of our beloved soldiers, Thank you and thank you to all the friends and family for making our country so great. God Bless, and let us not forget those that gave there lives for our freedom nor the real reason for this Holiday.

New Pages

Hey guys, So I am working on setting up some new pages for your enjoyment, one full of all of my favorite quotes from Bible verses, Nerd Quotes, Words of Wisdom, Pick Up Lines and everything in between. Then another page for all the movies I have seen- just starting on that one so bare with me as I have seen a least 10 ever week since I graduated college. And then another one for book reviews. I would love comments on things you like don't like as well as suggestions on if you want me to do a certain book or movie, and I will get one that, the pages should soon have pics as well. Just wanted to give you all a heads up on what I am up to. Also if you have further suggestions for possible pages or post in general I am open to suggestions as always and might just do it. Thanks again for reading. Oh in case you don't know, you can get to these pages simply by clicking on them (Quotes, Movie Reviews etc.) at the top left, and you can always go back to Home to see my most recent posts. Enjoy. Oh and P.S. For the movies and books I am also gonna be posting on each of them so you can read them all that way too at least the new ones as I read/ watch them, but also have them up on the page for easy reference.

2 Years of The Life of Krista Marie

Hey guys, so it has no officially been 2 years since I starting this blog! In that time I have had over 16,000 hits and that doesn't count my own, that is admits my 138 random posts. I just wanted to say a big Thank you to all my followers. I very much appreciate it. Also please feel free to leave me any suggestions or suggestions for what you would like me to write about more or less. I am open to all of them so let me know and I look forward to many more exciting years to come.

From Bible Belt to Stroke Belt

For anyone that hasn't heard of it, the Bible Belt is an informal term for a region consisting primary of the southern, and some southwestern states of the U.S., where socially conservative evangelical Protestantism dominates the culture of these areas. For your reference, to your left is a map of what is typically deemed the "Bible Belt" determined based on Baptist population.

Now compare that with the map on the right based on the highest percentage of strokes. Crazy right? It seems eating all that "good American food" very common in this southern portion of the country might just send us all to heaven sooner than we might think. New York Times reports that the Bible Belt, with its deep fat frying and bad eating habits could be renamed: Stroke Belt.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) age-adjusted annual rates of stroke mortality among adults 35 and older in the eight Stroke Belt states (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee) were on average, 125 per 100,000 individuals, compared to 96 per 100,000 Americans in the remaining 40 contiguous states and the District of Columbia (2000-2006).

Preachers name all kinds of sins and their congregations know they should repent. Lying, stealing, drunkenness, cheating, disorderly conduct... Seems like they might have been leaving out one BIG one, Gluttony. We pig out as though this privilege of eating and drinking is ours to abuse any way we want. Big greasy breakfasts, large and hearty lunches, huge buffets of appetizers, followed by a main course, and then how could we leave out dessert! And don't forget calorie-rich drinks to get it all down. Yup it is all delicious, don't get me wrong, but it is killing you. Also, we can't compare ourselves to others and say, "Better than they are!" I'm not looking at anyone's sins because I know how broken my own heart is in this and other areas. I too love to eat unhealthy foods, drink soda, and sit around in front of the boob tube. But there comes a time when we have to step away and not overly indulge in such pleasures. Just because the bible belt is against other such sins gives them no right to jump to gluttony instead. It too needs to come to a halt.

On another, yet similar news a recent study has shown that this same Bible/ Stroke Belt has also been linked to Cognitive decline. Researchers believe shared risk factors among members of this population are to blame. The Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study, led by Principal Investigator George Howard, DrPH, recruited over 30,000 U.S. adults aged 45 or older from 2003 through 2007 and is following them for stroke and cognitive decline. REGARDS participants included 56% from the Stroke Belt states and 44% from the remaining states in the continental U.S. including D.C. which researchers collectively termed "non-Belt" states.

Researchers assessed brain function using the Six-item Screener (SIS)—a test of global cognitive function that includes item recall and temporal orientation. SIS scores range from 0 to 6 with a score of 4 or less representing cognitive impairment. Results indicate that 8.1% of participants showed cognitive impairment at their most recent assessment, over a mean of 4.1 years following the initial assessment. Stroke Belt residents had a greater likelihood of cognitive impairment than non-Belt residents (odds ratio=1.18); all demographic factors and time independently predicted impairment. Risk of cognitive impairment was 18% higher in residents of the Stroke Belt than in those living in non-Belt states after adjusting for the influences of age, sex, race, and education level.

I think this goes to show that the Bible Belt has much to fear, Damnation, Stroke, and Now Retardation. Yikes. Maybe I won't use my deep fryer tonight after all.

The End of the World....

6pm Saturday May 21st, 2011, has now come and gone and guess what, Harold Camping was wrong yet again. To all those out there that may have fallen for his lies and predictions I what to urge you to seek out the truth and not be so easily swayed by people especially some one with a track record like Camping. He obviously has no authority on predicted such things and should not be taken seriously.

“Those prophets are prophesying lies while claiming my authority! I did not send them. I did not commission them. I did not speak to them. They are prophesying to these people false visions, worthless predictions, and the delusions of their own mind” (Jeremiah 14:14, NET)

Please do not allow people such as Camping and other corrupt "Christians" sway your opinions and trust in God and his word. These individuals are not representing Christ and are not speaking truth and I would hate to see you forming skepticism of Christianity because of these individuals. They are confused and not following or reading what is really in Scripture. Those false billboards and messages plastering that "the Bible Guaranteeing it" are straight up lies. The Bible actually says,
But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father
in Matthew 24:36 and
....The Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him
in
Matthew 24:44 I plead with you do not let the lies of these people tell you other wise for they are lies. What now for you disillusioned followers of this most recent end times cult? By God’s grace wake up! (Revelation 3:2). Now is the time to face the truth: Your trust should have been in what Christ has said in His Word, not in what Camping was foisting upon the words of the Bible.

Let us not forget that God's word and his promises are flawless unlike that of Camping and as Proverbs 30: 5-6 reads
Do not add to his words or he will rebuke you as a liar
Camping obviously missed this verse as well as
I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book
(Revelation 22:18), admits his faulty calculations as he has now been exposed as the liar he is, just as he was in 1994. Harold Camping’s predictions have been the delusions of his own mind, stories he has made up. They have been the ramblings of a foolish old man. Christ said that many would come “to deceive the elect—if that were possible” (Mark 13:22). False teachers, false brothers, and false philosophies will come to deceive us, but it appears the deceptions will not stick, for they lack truth like the truth that is in the word of God, which with stands from generation to generation. And God will not allow truth to be mixed with falsehood forever. He will shake things. He will shake us to the core, if the core is true and the core is Christ!

Yes Camping his followers and the like have been deceived and been wrong as they have caused others to be deceived and lead a stray but let us not be so quick to judge and condemn them. Condemn there sin yes, but not them for we too are deceived in many ways and it is God alone that has the authority to judge on such matters. May we instead pray for the healing of those who have been devastated and shaken, and let us not be. Do not be so quick to elevate yourself above such people but let us use this situation to further humble ourselves and rely on God's truth not the truth dictated to us by society or even other Christians. Let us pray for Mr. Camping, that he would confess his sin and arrogance and resign from the radio, resign from “public” life. I say this in adherence to the words of Paul, who told Timothy, “command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies” (1 Timothy 1:3-4).

Lastly, when all is said and done, Christ will return, the Day of Judgment will one day arrive, and when that happens, there will be no escaping.
In the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, 'Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.' But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men
2Peter 3:3-7

Just Because Camping's prediction has come and gone does not now mean we are safe from any future non-since, in fact I fell that this is going to become rapidly more and more common as more and more false prophesies come about, and our eagerness to leave may make us more susceptible to falling for such non-sense. For this reason we must now more than ever stay true in reading God's word and trusting in him completely so we may see the absurdity of such teaching when it is taught to us.

And as for the whole end of the world, in December, 2012, that too is false, so please don't fall for such things. Here’s the deal, my friends. Live life every day as if it were your last day. That doesn’t mean spend the mortgage money on that new Jaguar convertible so you can tool around town repo man comes and collects on the unpaid car loan. That sets up the scenario where Mr. Wells Fargo will knock on your door and politely tell you that the house you love is his, and he wants it back. No what this means is do not leave what ought to be done today till tomorrow. It means make sure that if Jesus did come back tomorrow that you would have everything done that you wanted to do done before then. It means sharing Christ's love to one another rather than holding grudges and hating each other. It means being quite to forgive and slow to anger. Learn to get along. It’s true – everything you DO need to know about life, you probably did learn in kindergarten.

Maybe the Apocalypse predictors should take a lesson from kindergarten. Now, more than ever, we need to learn to stick together. All of us. If it is the end of the world, we’ll be way less frightened if we’re holding hands and facing it together. And if it’s not, we’ll all be a whole lot happier. Now let us stop trying to calculate when and set a date but let us get ready for there is so much to do and so many relationships to build and repair why are we all wasting our time debating when its going to happen when we are not even ready for it. Go for we have been blessed to be a blessing and let us start acting like it is really the End of the World let us actually think about all the things we would wish we had done and let us do them today!

It's The Most Shamrock-ful Time Of The Year!!!!!!!

Tuesday night after a super duper bible study, I got the most random urg to go to McDonald's before heading off to my night job. I had no idea why since I am not usually a big fan of McDonald's and hadn't been there in months. But I could not resist as I was craving something I knew not what. As I pulled through the drive through and looked at the sign I knew instantly that I had been guided there by God himself as I saw SHAMROCK SHAKES!!!!! I had no idea that they were ever offered this early, as early March was the earliest I had ever gotten one. And I was so so so excited!!!!! They are back my friends and just as delicious as ever, this year they are even offering whipped cream and a cherry to top them off!!!! And as I am now surrounded by McDonald's I see nothing stopping me from shattering last years record of 38! I am well on my way with 8 so far and it isn't even March. Just thought I would let you all know the Shakes are back get them while they last!!!!! Enjoy!!!!

Industrial Design Film

Although my research has been halted amidst college graduation, car wrecks and job hunting I was recently came across a very interesting finding that I figured I would share with you. As you may now or previously know, even subtle sterical changes in the three-dimensional structure of a molecule can have far-reaching consequences for one or several of the molecule’s functions. The shape of molecules is not only determined genetically, but is also determined through their environment wherein the chemical environment and physical conditions, such as pressure and temperature, are important parameters. Moreover, other molecules can affect the structure of a biomolecule, for example in order to enhance, attenuate or completely inhibit a molecule’s particular function. In this process, the interplay of influences and interactions can be extraordinarily complex.

Even if a molecule's structure and all environmental parameters are known, it is still possible to modulate its function, since biomolecules are dynamic and because the movement of their constituents underlies certain degrees of freedom. The molecular oscillations can be so strong as to enable the binding pockets of proteins to close or open. Even if a molecule is present in its ‘proper' three-dimensional structure, this does not necessarily mean that a potential binding partner can in any case come into contact with it.

These associations already reveal the challenges faced by designers of new molecules. A huge amount of data needs to be acquired in order to be able to describe all the natural states of a molecule and its interactions with other molecules. Such a huge amount of data can only be acquired with the help of modern bioinformatics, which is a field that has been growing in importance in recent years. For example, researchers at the Centre for Bioinformatics at the University of Tübingen are developing special software programmes that enable the discovery of new pharmaceutically active molecules or modify known active agents so that they can be oriented to specific research questions. These software programmes are used to model and simulate certain situations and conditions based on existing knowledge. The "BALL" software package developed by the researchers from Tübingen is available free of charge to interested scientists. The bioinformaticians from Tübingen are already working towards "Second Life" in order to enable experts from all around the world to work simultaneously with a virtual 3D molecule.

“Virtual Screening” reduces the design efforts considerably
Computers are also required to design new and optimised enzymes that are used in industrial production and the production of pharmaceuticals, such as biocatalysts. For example, researchers at the Institute of Technical Biochemistry at the University of Stuttgart optimise substrate binding pockets on the computer in order to increase an enzyme’s selectivity for certain substrates. Subsequently, enzyme modifications are modelled in silico in order to design enzymes that highly selectively produce only one stereoisomer of a certain product.

The “Molecular and Cellular Modelling” group at EML Research gGmbH in Heidelberg has been dealing with macromolecules since 2000. The group is mainly focused on proteins and develops computer-assisted methods to predict and simulate biomolecular interactions.

Hardness test in the laboratory
Whether the researchers design a medical compound or a biocatalyst, all molecular designs that have stood their test in virtual simulations need to be tested on a small scale in the laboratory before they are ready for application. The scientists are often faced with surprising discoveries. Not all new or modified molecules stand a hardness test in the laboratory. If a newly designed molecule does not work as expected, it will once again be tested in a virtual environment. This is not as bad as it may sound, because the scientists usually have several suitable candidates available that were previously selected based on database searches.

The researchers can specifically look for molecules or molecule fragments in 3D databases containing structural data that fit into a certain reaction site in a target molecule or are complementary with it and have the sought-after sterical and electrochemical properties. ‘Virtual screening' is gaining in importance as the knowledge about molecules and their functional principles increases. Virtual screening helps to limit the number of active molecules that need to be tested in the laboratory to between 50 and 1,000.

Structural data are often obtained from the analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns resulting from the irradiation of crystallised molecules. X-ray diffraction patterns help to determine the exact positions of the atoms and deduce the duration and angle of binding. However, not all proteins can be crystallised easily, which is also why other methods are used to elucidate the proteins' structure. NMR spectroscopy, a specialty of the "NMR Core Facility" at the University of Constance, provides an alternative and complementation to other methods. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscope produces a broad range of information about the chemical connections of the molecules analysed and about their interactions with their molecular environment.

De novo molecular design – in the footsteps of evolution
Sometimes, mathematical algorithms are used to imitate evolutionary developments and thereby enable the de novo design of biomolecules for use as medical compounds. These mathematical algorithms involve sequential cycles of accidental mutagenesis and selection. The recombination of genes can also be reproduced with computers.

The non-evolutionary de novo design does not necessarily involve the new combination of atoms. If possible, known structural fragments of different length are combined. In the case of medical compounds, the crystal structure of a target molecule serves as reference structure. Care needs to be taken that the new molecule fits spatially into the crystal structure of the target molecule and that it interacts specifically with the target structure.

Molecular design is not always only used for the search for new active compounds or the optimisation of a certain reaction. A group of researchers led by Prof. Dr. Willi Bannwarth from the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Freiburg deals with the expansion of the genetic code in order to introduce non-natural amino acids at specific protein positions. One of the researchers’ goals is to evaluate the site and efficiency of expression by analysing the reaction of the non-natural amino acids with a fluorescent dye.

Combining and testing
Combinatorial chemistry is a procedure that for many decades has been used to design new molecules. Moreover, it has been gradually optimised. The chemical residues of a molecule’s backbone are altered or newly combined. The method is based on solid-phase synthesis in which the starting molecule is bound to a resin and exposed to an excess of certain binding partners in different solutions. Depending on the protocol used, this leads to a broad range of new compounds that are collected in compound libraries. In the laboratory, sometimes also with the help of computers, molecules with the sought-after characteristics are subsequently selected from the compounds contained in such libraries. High-throughput screening is an important tool to identify novel chemical entities.

Big Ears Can Save Your Life

Ming, Ming a six year old boy in China, was saved from the certain death of an eight-story fall when his head got stuck in the bars of a window after he fell through. He is believed to have wandered to the window while looking for his grandfather, who had left him sleeping to run an errand. The only thing that prevented from plunging straight through the grate to his death by his ears. Yes his ears, dumbo years are not only good for flying they are good for saving you from falling as well. Due to his ears, Ming Ming was left dangling high above the street, to the terror of passers-by below.

His screams, audible at street level, alerted them to his life-threatening predicament. Don’t move, Ming Ming! Firefighters work to save a six-year-old boy whose head got stuck in a window grate… eight stories up. Ming Ming appears to be praying as workers fight desperately to free him. Emergency services raced to save him, worried the weight of his body might pull him through the bars or cause him to suffocate. They used a hydraulic pressure expander to force the bars apart and pulled Ming Ming back into his family’s flat. A large crowd gathered on the street below as they carried out the rescue.

Truly this was a close call, and truly miraculous.

Almost Genius: The Cardboard Box That Fits Anything Perfectly!!!

Finally an invention to eliminate almost all of the wasted space in a cardboard box, has been created, the universal packaging system. How brilliant is this? The box is precisely fit anything that needs shipping. The individual cardboard sheets are scored with a triangle pattern that can either be fitted to an oddly shaped object, or formed into a custom fitted cardboard box.

Potentially massive savings would result from all the extra shipping space saved--cutting down on how much space each package takes up, and therefore the number of gas-guzzling trucks needed during shipping.

There's just a few niggles. For one, would anyone really put up with the added hassle of folding a custom-sized box, given all the added complexity? And two, the space savings issue might be more complicated than it seems: If people pack things in oddly shaped boxes, there's every possibility that these all don't fit together well enough to actually save space. But still, with a few tweaks--such as printed guidelines for easily creating boxes of different size--this could be the cleverest thing since the Puma shoebox redesign. Lol.

No I am not putting off my homework, I am becoming a competent citizen...

For all my dear facebook lovers...

Some might call it unproductive. Or maybe a bad habit. Or just a frivolous distraction. Or even dangerous. But I insist that daily Facebook use is time well spent.

“It’s like a social connection,it’s not a waste of time. It’s like talking on the phone – that isn’t a waste of time.”

Howell’s justification for the hours she spends on the social networking site is dead on, according to a study released today by the MacArthur Foundation. A team of researchers working on the foundation’s “Digital Youth Project” concluded that interaction with new media such as Facebook is increasingly becoming an essential part of becoming a competent citizen in the digital age.

And further, all that Web surfing isn’t necessarily eroding the intelligence or initiative of the young generation.

“It may look like kids are wasting a lot of time online, but they’re actually learning a lot of social, technical and also media literacy skills,” said Mizuko Ito, a researcher at the University of California, Irvine who led the study.

A team of researchers conducted more than 800 interviews of youths and their parents, and spent more than 5,000 hours observing teens on sites such as Facebook, MySpace [website] and YouTube. The goal was to find out how youths use digital media, such as social networking sites and video games, to understand and participate in society.

Some of their findings should be no surprise to teens or their parents.

For instance, teens like to hang out with their friends online. They learn social skills online. They flirt online.

They develop interests, express themselves creatively, and give each other feedback – all online.

But the kicker?

All that Internet time isn’t rotting their brains. Actually, it’s almost necessary, according to the study.

Kids denied access to new media, because their family can’t afford it or because their parents, school or library restrict their access or time on social networking sites, are likely to be short on skills that members of their generation are expected to possess, the researchers concluded.

“When kids lack access to the Internet at home, and public libraries and schools block sites that are central to their social communication, youth are doubly handicapped in their efforts to participate in common culture and sociability,” the study reads.

The research was funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, a social advocacy group that focuses, in part, on the effect of technology on children and society.

The study isn’t the first to suggest youths use new media in productive ways. Another study released in September by the Pew Internet and American Life Project suggested that teens use video games to stay in touch with friends – and that some games may even encourage youths to become involved in their communities.

April Fools????

So this past Thursday I was convinced the weather was trying to fool me although I was surely enjoying every moment of it sunny and 80's as compared to the usually overcast and 30's with a chance of snow showers. So sunny hot weather that is even a rarity for upstate New York in the winter was surely a shocker and one I gladly welcomed. Although I was convinced it was likely a fool trick the weather was playing on me and that our snowy winter like spring would soon return yet the rest of the weekend has continued with amazingly summer like weather enough to give me a remarkable sunglass and flip-flop burn on my face particularly so on my right side. All I have left to say is Praise God for global warming!!!

Drunk Man Tries to Revive Dead Opossum - Road Kill CPR

Crime Beat Pa. - A man from Pennsylvania has been charged with public drunkenness after he was seen trying to resuscitate a long-dead opossum along a highway. (I mean look at him isn't that the face of something you want to give mouth to mouth too? Can we really blame him?)

Donald Wolfe, a 55-year old man, is the lead character in the odd case of road kill CPR that was witnessed by several people passing by the rural highway scene, according to an Associated Press report.

***

The item for the odd ball report cites State police Trooper Jamie Levier who "says one person saw Wolfe kneeling before the animal and gesturing as though he were conducting a séance."

Another witness told authorities the drunk man actually tried to give the dead critter mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The attempt failed. The animal was long dead, according to the report.

Water Glasses

So I found this really fascinating article that I thought I would share with you being basically blind myself I have always greatly appreciated the ability to see. And I can still remember the first day in 3rd grade that I could see after getting my first pair of glasses it was so incredible just staring at everything I no longer had to walk up next to things as I could tell what they were long before. It was so amazing. Now I often take my sight for granted and yet I still am so so blind. God can see and I only think I can see just like before I got glasses I had such a twisted prescription of the world as I was blind but I just thought that was how the world was. Each day I am reminded of my blindness and I am so grateful for that as I realize that only God sees everything and what I see is just a blurred and often warped image. I want to thank God so much for my sight and for glasses to see this world and I am humbled to know how blind I remain and remember to seek him all the more for truth about what I am seeing and what I can not see.

So this isn't exactly about what I just commented on but have you ever imagined what it would be like without the ability to own glasses and see in the physical since for some of us that might not be all the bad but I know for me I would hardly be able to function. So what about the millions of people that don't even have money for food how do they see. Listen to the newest way to address this issue.

What if it were possible, he thought, to make a pair of glasses which, instead of requiring an optician, could be "tuned" by the wearer to correct his or her own vision? Might it be possible to bring affordable spectacles to millions who would never otherwise have them?

More than two decades after posing that question, Silver now feels he has the answer. The British inventor has embarked on a quest that is breathtakingly ambitious, but which he insists is achievable - to offer glasses to a billion of the world's poorest people by 2020.

Some 30,000 pairs of his spectacles have already been distributed in 15 countries, but to Silver that is very small beer. Within the next year the now-retired professor and his team plan to launch a trial in India which will, they hope, distribute 1 million pairs of glasses.

The target, within a few years, is 100 million pairs annually. With the global need for basic sight-correction, by his own detailed research, estimated at more than half the world's population, Silver sees no reason to stop at a billion.

If the scale of his ambition is dazzling, at the heart of his plan is an invention which is engagingly simple.

Silver has devised a pair of glasses which rely on the principle that the fatter a lens the more powerful it becomes. Inside the device's tough plastic lenses are two clear circular sacs filled with fluid, each of which is connected to a small syringe attached to either arm of the spectacles.

The wearer adjusts a dial on the syringe to add or reduce amount of fluid in the membrane, thus changing the power of the lens. When the wearer is happy with the strength of each lens the membrane is sealed by twisting a small screw, and the syringes removed. The principle is so simple, the team has discovered, that with very little guidance people are perfectly capable of creating glasses to their own prescription.

Silver calls his flash of insight a "tremendous glimpse of the obvious" - namely that opticians weren't necessary to provide glasses. This is a crucial factor in the developing world where trained specialists are desperately in demand: in Britain there is one optometrist for every 4,500 people, in sub-Saharan Africa the ratio is 1:1,000,000.

The implications of bringing glasses within the reach of poor communities are enormous, says the scientist. Literacy rates improve hugely, fishermen are able to mend their nets, women to weave clothing. During an early field trial, funded by the British government, in Ghana, Silver met a man called Henry Adjei-Mensah, whose sight had deteriorated with age, as all human sight does, and who had been forced to retire as a tailor because he could no longer see to thread the needle of his sewing machine. "So he retires. He was about 35. He could have worked for at least another 20 years. We put these specs on him, and he smiled, and threaded his needle, and sped up with this sewing machine. He can work now. He can see."

"The reaction is universal," says Major Kevin White, formerly of the US military's humanitarian programme, who organised the distribution of thousands of pairs around the world after discovering Silver's glasses on Google. "People put them on, and smile. They all say, 'Look, I can read those tiny little letters.'"

Making and distributing a billion pairs of spectacles is no small task, of course - even at a dollar each (the target cost), and without Silver taking any profit, the cost is eye-watering.

This is what Silver calls "the challenge of scaling up".

For the Indian project he has joined forces with Mehmood Khan, a businessman whose family trust runs a humanitarian programme based in 500 villages in the northern state of Haryana, from where he originates.

There will be no shortage of takers in the region, Khan says. "One million in one year is straightaway peanuts for me. In the districts where we are working, one district alone will have half a million people [who need the technology]." Khan's day job is as Global Leader of Innovation for Unilever, and though his employer will have no direct connection with the scheme, having contact with 150m consumers a day, as he points out, means he is used to dealing with large numbers.

But surely finding funding on this scale will be impossible? "I share a vision with Josh," says Khan. "A thing like this, once it works, you create awareness, you enrol governments and the UN, and the model becomes scaleable. People begin to believe." And from a business point of view, he notes wryly, when poor people become more economically developed they also become potential customers.

In addition to the enormous manufacturing and distribution challenges, Silver has one other pressing problem, namely addressing the sole complaint about the glasses - their rather clunky size and design.

"Work is going on on several new designs, and further work will be required to get the costs down. The truth is that there is, at the moment, no device that can be made for a dollar in volumes of 100 million.

"But I am entirely confident that we can do that."

Such is his determination, you wouldn't bet against it. Oxford University, at his instigation, has agreed to host a Centre for Vision in the Developing World, which is about to begin working on a World Bank-funded project with scientists from the US, China, Hong Kong and South Africa. "Things are never simple. But I will solve this problem if I can. And I won't really let people stand in my way."

Happy Pi Day

Happy Pi day everyone. For anyone that is unaware of this rather significant day it is the day to eat lots it of Pie and pass it off as being a Math geek. For those that don't know Pi, is the Greek letter (π), is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th. Pi = 3.1415926535…

With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational and transcendental number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating. The symbol for pi was first used in 1706 by William Jones, but was popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.

For yet another reason to celebrate this day is that it is Albert Einstein's Birthday he would be 131 years old had he never died that is pretty old. Have a great Pi day everyone and eat lots of pi!!

For an extra special treat of the first million digits of Pi click on the title of this link bet you can't memorize that.
